Mangalore
For a cause: The dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, D. Veerendra Heggade, receiving a painting at a function in Mangalore on Saturday. MANGALORE: A picture, it is said, paints a thousand words. When this picture is used to educate people about the dangers of substance abuse and its impact on society, especially the youth, its worth may not be easy to evaluate. Jana Jagruthi Vedike, Mangalore, and Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) organised a daylong camp on April 20. A dozen artists from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts participated in the camp to spread the message on substance abuse, through an innovative programme, “Varna Jagruthi”. The artists depicted the misery of victims of substance abuse through their paintings. The vedike presented one of the paintings to the dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, D. Veerendra Heggade, at a function here on Saturday. Dr. Heggade was all praise for the innovative steps taken by the vedike in dealing with the issue. “I will ensure that the painting is displayed at all future de-addiction camps organised under the banner of the SKDRDP,” he said. Tackling substance abuse is a big challenge, he said. Efforts of organisations such as the vedike and the SKDRDP could be seen as an “alilu seve” in this direction, he added.
