The new rates will be Rs.1.25 per minute MTNL to soon offer “missed call alert” facility NEW DELHI: The Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) on Saturday announced reduction in its STD rates for its mobile subscribers. Effective from Sunday, the new STD rates for GSM mobiles (Dolphin and Trump) and CDMA service (Garuda) will be Rs.1.25 per minute against the current Rs.1.75. Addressing a press conference here, MTNL Chairman and Managing Director R.S.P. Sinha said the new rates that are cheapest compared to other operators will be applicable in both Delhi and Mumbai where MTNL has its operations. The reduced STD rates will applicable to all GSM tariff plans including lifetime pre-paid service and post-paid schemes. Another bonanza for MTNL landline subscribers is that the STD pulse rate has been increased from 36 seconds to 60 seconds. “With this, STD rates for a landline user will be 80 paise per minute to maximum of Rs.1.20 per minute depending upon various tariff plans,” Mr. Sinha said, adding that MTNL would soon offer “missed call alert” facility free of cost to its subscribers. He claimed that MTNL was now offering cheapest STD tariffs in the Capital compared to its competitors. While Vodafone had slashed its STD tariffs to Rs.1.30 a minute, Bharti Airtel’s new rates are Rs.1.50 a minute. Mr. Sinha, who also inaugurated a state-of-the-art Internet protocol (IP) based GSM system of additional capacity of 7.5-lakh at Minto Road here, said MTNL would be adding 50-lakh new connections within the next six months. “We have been expanding our base fast, thanks to upgradation and strengthening of our system and network. From a meagre 5 per cent market share in 2004, we now enjoy almost 20 per cent market share. It proves that we have succeeded in attracting a large number of subscribers towards our services,” he added.
