Staff Reporter
“Plan to enrol them in special schools or in mainstream education during the current academic year”
Tuticorin: The entire 881 child workers enumerated recently during a census carried out by National Child Labour Project in the district would be rehabilitated before July end, according to R. Natarajan, Project Director, NCLP.
“We plan to enrol the entire lot of children either into special schools run by the NCLP across the district or into mainstream education during the current academic year to provide them with basic education thereby wean them away from jobs at very young age,” he added.
Action plan
Stating that the NCLP had chalked out an action plan to eradicate child labour, he said during last fiscal (2007-08), a total of 151 child workers were rescued from workplaces.
Sixty-seven 67 child labourers were rescued in 2006-07, 80 in 2005-06 and 207 in 2004-05.
At present, a total of 867 rescued child workers who had been rehabilitated during the last few years were studying at the 19 special schools run by NCLP in different parts of the district.
