‘Make education focus on the needs of tomorrow’ Bangalore: Education is a paradox as it needs conflict with the cultural, religious and ethical values of the day. This is true especially with respect to international schools, said Richard Tangye, executive director of Council of International Schools (CIS). Mr. Tangye told The Hindu that CIS is a not-for-profit organisation of a worldwide international educational community, comprising over 500 member schools and 400 colleges/universities. It was formed to enable member organisations to achieve and deliver the highest standards in international education and continually improve the outcome of student learning. “Today’s world is knowledge-intensive, intensely competitive, fast moving and crosses national boundaries. Education is the only thing that can resolve the challenges, through schools that encompass the concept of internationalism within their mission, curriculum, policies and practices,” he said. He also said the need of the hour was to make education focus on the needs of tomorrow, and teach children to ‘think’, rather than learn facts. International schools, earlier, only catered to the expatriate community. “This is not true anymore. Today, international schools have become local schools for global citizens and global schools for local citizens,” he added.
