In memory: Congress party workers launching the ‘Rajiv Jyothi Yatra’ at the KPCC office in Bangalore on Saturday. Bangalore: The Congress party will observe the 17th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by taking out a Rajiv Jyothi Yatra across many States to culminate at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21. Digvijay Singh, former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, who is coordinating the party efforts for the elections, inaugurated the “jyoti” and handed it over to S.S. Prakasam — convener, Labour Department, in the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee — who is leading a contingent of 200 party workers to Sriperumbudur. Sriperumbudur is the place where Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated 17 years ago and Congress workers take the Rajiv jyothi every year to the spot and light candles near the memorial to pay respect to the departed leader. Union Minister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs V. Narayanaswamy, who attended the function, told presspersons that the jyothi would awaken the people about the danger that terrorism posed to the unity, and security of the country. Asked why the Congress was working with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam at the Centre, even though it allegedly supported the LTTE, Mr. Narayanaswamy, reminded the press that it was the DMK which had banned the organisation in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Prakasam said that the contingent would visit all the towns en route to Puduchery where the jyothi would be received by Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy. It would leave for Sriperumbudur via Chennai. He said crowds of people had received them at Ramanagaram, Maddur, Mandya and Srirangapatna.
