Impeccably turned out bagpipers of the Madras Regimental Centre delight visitors A ‘spacecraft’ made of 20,000 carnations and a ‘flower tower’ draw attention
Playing lilting tunes: The bagpipers of the Madras Regimental Centre in attendance at the Annual Floral Carnival in the Government Botanical Garden in Udhagamandalam on Saturday. — Udhagamandalam: The two-day 112th Annual Floral Carnival (AFC) which got under way at the Government Botanical Garden here on Saturday has evoked mixed reactions. While some said that they were impressed with the display, others opined that when compared to many of the previous ones, it was mediocre. The absence of Chennai-based VIPs was also viewed with mixed feelings. Whereas some said that it had undermined the importance of the event, many others felt that their absence had helped the organisers give their undivided attention to the show. However a feature of the show which tourists and locals singled out for appreciation had nothing to do with flowers or anything related to them. It was the presence of the impeccably turned out bagpipers of the Madras Regimental Centre. Having greeted the visitors with their mellifluous music from early in the morning, the members of the renowned band also played some catchy tunes which made many dance. Speaking to The Hindu, some of the visitors said, “We will carry back fond memories of the band.” They added that the band being in attendance had enhanced the prestige of the show. While a flower bedecked welcome arch was put up near the threshold, in the exhibition section a collection of flowers like gerberas, anthuriums, carnations, petunias, African marigold, phlox etc. caught one’s eye. A 23-feet-tall spacecraft made of over 20,000 carnations was the cynosure of all eyes while a flower tower nearby provided a colourful backdrop for photographs. Some of the vegetable carvings commanded a second look and a display of medicinal plants by the J.S.S.College of Pharmacy was informative. A good part of the garden was illuminated. Stalls of Raj Bhavan, the Defence Services Staff College and the Canara bank were impressive. The inflow of tourists to the venue was not as heavy as expected. The ‘nagging’ attitude adopted on the eve of the event by many, including politicians and officials of various departments in matters as trivial as issuance of invitations and car passes, not only prevented the organisers from devoting more time to making preparations for the show but also prevented them from doing justice to their assigned duties.
