CUDDALORE: An assessment committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has estimated that the strong gale that ripped through Cuddalore on Wednesday night caused extensive damage to banana crops in the district.

According to S.Dhanasekaran, district secretary of the CPI (M), who led the committee, banana crops on 5,000 acres spreading across 30 villages, including East Ramapuram, West Ramapuram, S.Pudur, Annaveli, Vazhisothanaipalayam, Sathankuppam, Kodukkanpalayam, Keeraipalayam, Naduveerapattu and Enathirimangalam, were totally damaged.

The committee called upon the State government to depute the officials of the Horticulture Department to make a comprehensive assessment of the damage and sanction a compensation of Rs. 25,000 an acre.

It also urged the government to extend the crop insurance scheme to banana crop too. The committee comprised M. Narayanan, district secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha, G. Madhavan, district executive committee member, and S. Dakshinamurthy and R. Alavandhar, district committee members.

Puducherry

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday urged the Puducherry government to provide relief to the farmers who suffered crop losses and the people whose huts were damaged due to squally weather that swept different parts of Puducherry on Monday and Thursday.

In a statement here, the unit secretary V. Perumal said that houses with thatched roof had been badly damaged in different parts of Puducherry.

Banana groves had been fully destroyed and cultivation of mango, drumstick and vegetables had also been affected, he added.

He urged the government to announce a relief package for loss of banana crop at the rate of Rs.10,000 an acre and a compensation of Rs. 2,000 for each of the damaged huts.
