Informative booklet: Union Minister of State for Law and Justice K. Venkatapathy (second left) releases the souvenir to Tamilachi Thangapandian (second right) at the conference on Tamilology, in Coimbatore on Saturday. — Coimbatore: The Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, K. Venkatapathy on Saturday underlined the need for inculcating attachment towards the Tamil language among youth. He was speaking at the inauguration of the 39th International Tamilology Conference organised by the Tamil Department of the Bharathiar University in association with the Research Foundation for Tamil Culture of Madurai and Tamil Mandram of Indian Universities. “It is the duty and responsibility of every Tamilian to contribute his mite to and strive for protecting the Tamil language, its rich legacy, history and culture,” he said. Lack of linguistic and racial affinity among the present day generations was the reason for the importance of this language fading away. He exhorted the need for Tamil teachers to be role models. Mr.Venkatapathy said that it was time for researchers, scholars and teachers of Tamil and those with linguistic affinity to conduct awareness camps to enlighten the generations of today and tomorrow on the richness and importance of the language. Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, G. Thiruvasagam, urged the Tamil mandram of the Indian Universities’ Research Foundations to join hands and take steps to translate science curriculum text books into Tamil. He announced that the Tamil and Physics Department of the University would join hands to translate the first year B.Sc Physics course text books into Tamil before the next Tamilology conference. Poet Tamilachi Thangapandian said that Tamil, considered the mother of all languages, had a rich history and legacy besides being a treasure of “guidelines for life”. Liberalisation and globalisation of economy had resulted in people losing interest in Tamil. The title of Tamizhar Varalatru Semmal was conferred on Gurusami Sidhar for his works.
