Great day for Aman Vyas

Chennai: The first day of races in the National Coastal under-16 sailing championship went off smoothly as scheduled here on Saturday as the three races were held in rather mild conditions. The winds picked up during the second race to about 9 to 11 knots swinging a few degrees to south. Before the third race could be started, the winds dropped to about 4 to 5 knots and swung to south east and the marks had to be shifted causing a slight delay.

Once the race started the wind further shifted south and kept oscillating thereafter during the race because of which the course had to be shortened. Fourteen-year-old Aman Vyas of National Sailing School (Bhopal) had a great day coming first in the first and third races and second in the second.

Another young sailor also made a mark. Ten-year-old Varsha Gautham of TNSA finished among the top—fifth place—in Race 2. It’s a creditable achievement given the fact that she started sailing just a year back and this is her first Coastal Nationals.

The results: Provisional: Race 1: 1. Aman Vyas (NSS), 2. Varun Thakkar (TNSA), 3. Praveen Prabhakar (TNSA), 4. Hussain Bhavnagarwala (TNSA), 5. Shwetha Sadanand (TNSA).

Race 2: 1. Hussain Bhavnagarwala (TNSA), 2. Aman Vyas (NSS), 3. Rufus Patrick (TNSA), 4. Varun Thakkar (TNSA), 5. Varsha Gautham (TNSA).

Race 3: 1. Aman Vyas (NSS), 2. Praveen Prabhakar (TNSA), 3. Hussain Bhavnagarwala (TNSA), 4. Niveditha (TNSA), 5. Varun Thakkar (TNSA).
