Blocks laid around Sri Meenakshi Temple.

MADURAI: In a few months, battery-powered ‘golf carts,’ in which VIPs and foreign dignitaries are often seen, can be spotted on the four Chithirai Streets that surround the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here.

The district administration has sent a proposal to the Government for operating two such cars on the 1,600-metre stretch around the temple, where ‘paver blocks’ are being laid. If the project materialises, Madurai could be the first district in the State to possess battery cars for tourism purposes, District Collector S.S. Jawahar told The Hindu. The ongoing beautification work, which was halted on account of the Chithirai festival, has restarted.

“Work on the South Chithirai Street and some fine-tuning work in the remaining three streets are pending. The Corporation has been told to complete it by June 30,” he said. Once the work is over, allowing only pedestrians on the Chithirai streets would be considered.
