New Delhi: A Motor Licensing Officer (MLO) and eight ‘touts’ were remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody by a court here in connection with a case registered against them for allegedly indulging in corrupt practices in granting driving licenses to incompetent candidates. “Taking into consideration the facts and circumstances of the case, the accused, Praveen Desai, and eight other touts were remanded to 14-days’ judicial custody till May 30,” Special Judge A. S. Yadav said in his order. No more police custodyAll the accused were on Saturday produced before the court after the expiry of their two-day police custody. The prosecution told the court they did not require further police custody for the accused as the police had thoroughly interrogated them. Racket in operationThe police alleged that Desai was actively involved in a racket operated by the eight touts in Ashok Vihar Transport Authority for providing motor vehicle licenses to unsuccessful candidates. Incompetent persons were being issued licenses by them in alleged conspiracy with Desai, they said. Desai and the others were arrested by the Delhi Police on May 14 under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. --PTI
