K.C.N. Gowda, K.S. Ashwath, N. Rathnakar and Dwarakish felicitated The colour film was released in the State on April 24 Bangalore: The central message of the 43-year-old Kannada film ‘Satya Harishchandra,’ based on poet Raghavanka’s ‘Harishchandra Kavya,’ is socially and culturally relevant even today, writer and film-maker Baragur Ramachandrappa has said. He was speaking at a function organised by Nandana Samskrithika Samsthe to felicitate the veteran producer-distributor K.C.N. Gowda, who got the black and white film converted into colour, here on Saturday. Veteran actors K.S. Ashwath, N. Rathnakar and Dwarakish, who played important roles in the film, were also felicitated. The colour film was released across the State on April 24, birthday of Kannada thespian Rajkumar, who played the lead role in the film. Contrary to the general view that the glorious saga of King Harishchandra epitomised values such as truth, virtue, individual morals and political ethics, it was basically a story of social justice at the hands of a righteous king. It was wrong to narrow down the plot’s purpose to the notion of “vachana paripalane,” Prof. Ramachandrappa argued. The film produced by K.V. Reddy was released in 1965. With the support of his sons, K.C.N. Chandrashekhar, president of the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, and K.C.N. Mohan, producer, he ventured to convert the film into colour at an estimated cost of Rs. 3 crore.
