Cantonment Board elections today
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: After 11 years, the election to the post of seven ward members of the St. Thomas Mount-cum-Pallavaram Cantonment Board will be held on Sunday.
The last election was held in February 1997. The earlier Cantonment Act, 1924 was revised in 2004 and the elections are being held based on the new Act, officials said.
Of the seven wards, two are reserved for women and one for Scheduled Caste. There are 74 candidates in the fray. Though most of them are members of political parties, they would be contesting as independent candidates.
In addition to the seven ward members, the Cantonment Board would have an equal representation from the Defence and Kancheepuram district administration. The Indian Army’s Station Commander will be the ex-officio president of the Cantonment Board, officials said. Brigadier V.N.Money is the Station Commander here. One of the seven ward members will be made the Board’s vice-president.
Voting will be held between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. in 20 polling booths in 11 locations in Pallavaram, Meenambakkam and St. Thomas Mount. Arrangements and police protection were in place to ensure smooth polling, the officials added.
