KARUR: The Confederation of NGOs of Rural India (CNRI) would work at the grass roots level to address the ills of the society, especially for the benefit of the poorest of the poor, former bureaucrat and CNRI Co-Chairman L.V. Saptharishi has assured the President Pratibha Patil. In a press release issued here on Saturday, a day after meeting with the President in New Delhi at the head of a delegation of heads of NGOs, Mr. Saptharishi noted the President had observed in the interaction that the NGOs could play a vital role in dispelling social evils and work for the amelioration of the most disadvantaged people of the society. The delegation included Managing Director of the Tiruchi based NGO, SEVAI A. Govindaraju, Gramium Director P. Narayanan, Shobha Yadan of CNRI Mahila Vibhag, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, and Premlatha Rawat, president, CNRI Uttarakhand Chapter. Mr. Saptarishi also added that the President suggested that the NGOs should increasingly learn to work together by sharing information and mutual experiences in various fields of activity. They should also work in closer contact with non-members to strengthen the NGO movement on positive and dynamic lines, the release added. The President was deeply appreciative of the recent National Meet organised by the CNRI in which more than 2,000 NGOs/SHGs from various parts of the country had participated. She expressed her satisfaction that she could address the gathering and acquaint herself with the problems and difficulties of the NGO sector. The President also referred to the “good works being done by the NGOs” in Tamil Nadu and desired that CNRI may organise a zonal meeting in Orissa for strengthening the movement in that region. The President advised the delegation that apart from economic related activities in which NGOs and SHGs were greatly involved, they should also work at the grossroots to fight social evils and disabilities of the most disadvantaged people of the society, according to Mr. Saptharishi.
