TIRUCHI: The Red Ribbon Express, a train that is traversing across the country to cover about 9,000 km and 180 centres to promote awareness on HIV/AIDS, would arrive in Tiruchi on June 11.

The train is part of a nation-wide campaign implemented by the National AIDS Control Organisation, the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and the Indian Railways to spread the message across country on HIV/AIDS.

The train would be stationed in Tiruchi on June 11 and 12, according to Collector T. It focuses on youth groups, women self-help group members, adolescents/student community from schools and colleges, youth in uniformed services and out-of-school/non-student youth, particularly in the rural areas. The train with seven coaches is equipped with educational material on HIV/AIDS, interactive touch screens, counselling and doctors cabins for providing counselling and offer treatment advice to patients.

Mr. Soundiah instructed the district officials to organise visits of various sections of the society including college and school students, voluntary organisations, self-help groups, and the public.

During the two days of the train’s halt here, cultural programmes would be held in 48 villages identified in the district by the eight-member cultural team coming as part of the campaign. The event would also be treated as a health festival, by organising exhibitions.

The cultural team would visit Thuraiyur, Thathaiyengarpet, Musiri, Pettavaithalai, Manapparai and Vaiyampatti by buses.

The Joint Director of Health Services V. Veerpandian, the Project Officer of the Integrated Child Development Scheme S. Revathy, Field Publicity Officer M. Therasanathan, K. Subramanian, Coordinator, Nehru Yuva Kendra, officials and representatives of NGOs attended the meeting.
