KOLKATA: Meenal Thakur of Maharashtra blanked Vidya Pillai of Tamil Nadu 5-0 in the final of the ONGC Spring Club seventh National 8-ball pool championship to win her first national crown here on Saturday. Meenal came up with some superb potting and positioning as she dominated the proceedings. Her form was so good that she outplayed Vidya in three racks, each time clearing the table with consummate ease. In the 9-ball too, Vidya lost 3-4 to Indira Gowda of Karnataka in the quarterfinals. Indira shocked defending champion M. Chitra of Karnataka 5-3 and will play Anuja Chandra in Sunday’s final. In the opening rounds of the men’s 8-ball National, defending champion Devendra Joshi and other seasoned campaigners Dharmendar Lilly, Manan Chandra, S. Talwar, Kamal Chawla had easy outings. The results: Ladies 9-ball: Semifinals: Indira Gowda bt Chitra 5-3; Anuja Chandra bt Meenal Thakur 5-0. Quarterfinals: Chitra bt Achint Maan 4-1; Indira bt Vidya Pillai 4-3; Meenal bt Suniti Damani 4-2; Anuja bt Shivani Agarwal 4-1.
