Though the general prize burden coupled with the inflation associated with the tourist season has affected practically everyone in Udhagamandalam, one set of people who are feeling the pinch most are the pensioners. Among them those dependent solely on their pension for making ends meet are the worst hit.

On the problems being faced by his group on account of the price rise, J.N.R.Pandian, a pensioner, says, “since all are reeling under the impact of the spiralling prices one can’t even approach another for help”. Regretting that the prices of all the commodities are shooting up, he says he has been forced to curtail his expenses.

Either the government should evolve ways forthwith to provide some relief on the price front or schemes to help struggling sections such as those depending on pensions should be implemented. The trading community is catering to the requirements of only those with purchasing power. “In such a scenario what can people like us do”, Mr. Pandian asks.

Purchase of vegetables is no longer dictated by preference, he says. Nowadays vegetables which don’t rock the budget automatically find a place in the menu.

Pointing out that a sensible lifestyle while in service is helping him pass through the difficult period with a reasonable amount of comfort, he says, “my advice to the younger generation is that they should cultivate the habit of savings”. Ostentation of any kind should be eschewed.
