This Day That Age
The Madras Government have posted orders for the handing over of 407 acres of land in Guindy from the Raj Bhavan Estate to the Government of India for the location of the Southern Higher Technological Institute. The Coordinating committee of the All-India Council for Technical Education had recommended that the institute be located in Madras, and the Madras Government had offered, free of cost, a suitable site in Guindy, where the Government College of Engineering with a tradition of over 100 years, the University College of Technology, with its advanced studies in Chemical Engineering and Textile Technology, and the Central Leather Research Institute are already located. Utilising the offer of this free site and also the technical assistance offered by the Government of West Germany, the Government of India have now come forward to establish this institute in Madras.
