Sarpanch arrested on charge of rape

Malkangiri: A sarpanch was arrested on Sunday on the charge of raping a minor girl several times by promising to marry her, police sources said.

Sarpanch of Padia panchayat, Ramu Karta, was arrested following a complaint by the 17-year old girl that he had taken her to several places including Bhubaneswar and raped her repeatedly, Superintendent of Police S K Gajbhiye said.

The accused, already married, had promised the girl to marry her but later refused to keep his word, prompting her to lodge a complaint with the police, he said. PTI
