KANNUR: The district leaders of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) have urged Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes to enhance the Employees Provident Fund pension. A press release issued by the district committee of the INTUC here said the leaders who had met Mr. Fernandes during his visit to the district on Saturday submitted a representation seeking that the minimum pension of Rs.500 be restored. The minimum pension sanctioned with effect from April 1, 1995 was withdrawn on October 26, 2006. The release said workers in the traditional industrial sectors who should have received the minimum pension were now being released Rs.40 and Rs.30. INTUC district president K. Surendran and leaders P. Ratnakaran, P. Shekharan, K.V. Raghavan and P. Purushothaman were among those who met Mr. Fernandes. MLA’s appealIn another representation to the Union Minister, K. Sudhakaran, MLA, demanded that the ESI Hospital at Thottada here be upgraded to a specialty hospital. He said the 50-bed hospital had no specialist doctors. Mr. Sudhakaran demanded appointment of specialist doctors, establishment of an intensive care unit, and ultrasound scanning, CT scanning and MRI scanning facilities. He also sought that the hospital be sanctioned two ambulances with modern facilities.
