Pilot project to improve attendance in Oriya schools

Staff Reporter

School headmasters are trained to handle the project

Instead of two examinations, there will be four tests

Weekends will be reserved for extra-curricular activities

BHUBANESWAR: In an attempt to arrest the diminishing attendance in Oriya medium schools of the State, the Khurda education circle has come up with a pilot project that would aim at redesigning the education system modelled after Central schools. Khurda Circle Inspector P. P. Bhol said the capital city alone had 105 Oriya medium schools and in the first phase the headmasters of all the high schools were trained recently to handle the experimental project.

“The Oriya medium schools have to be duly equipped with everything needed to be on a par with English medium schools to attract students,” she said and added that massive reformation in school curriculum and examination system was required to achieve the objective.

Instead of the two traditional examinations – half yearly and annual- during an academic year, there would be four tests including three unit tests and the annual examination.

Unit tests would help the teachers to assess the student’s developments, Ms. Bhol felt. Emphasis would also be on home tasks and vacation tasks, she revealed.

Weekends would be reserved for extra-curricular activities like debate, quiz and music competitions and the names of the winners would be announced during the mass prayer to create a competitive environment among students, said the Circle Inspector. Further, in an effort to bring more discipline on school campus with students’ involvement, each school would have three houses with an elected captain and vice-captain who would be named after Gandhi, Gopabandhu and Tagore. Teachers would be appointed as House Masters to look after discipline aspects of each house.

The Khurda Circle has 531 Oriya medium schools and all the schools would be covered under the pilot project during the ensuing academic session in a phased manner, it was learnt.
