Mixed response to setting up of power plant
Special Correspondent
NAGAPATTINAM: There was mixed response from the people to establish a Rs.3,000-crore thermal power plant at Neikuppai village in Nagapatinam district.
At the public hearing convened by the Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar, on Friday, fishermen of Nagapattinam district and Karaikal region in the Union Territory of Puducherry, objected to the proposed thermal power plant as it would affect the livelihood of fishermen and also fish wealth.
However, farmers from the Cauvery delta region and new entrepreneurs welcomed the proposed move. The Collector said that he would submit a report about the views to the Government and the Centre.
A large number of representatives from various fishermen associations, non-governmental organizations, farmers associations and entrepreneurs from various parts of Tamil Nadu and also from the Union Territory of Puducherry participated in the public hearing on establishing the thermal power plant in Nagapattinam district.
It was stated that it would be easy to bring coal from Karaikal once the new harbour started functioning in a year.
