New plan mooted for private buses

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry has called upon the Delhi Government to consider solutions for operating private stage carriage services in Delhi successfully.

In this direction, the PHD Chamber has suggested a four-point action plan to the Delhi Government which includes parking of private buses in the Delhi Transport Corporation depots as there was a need for organised parking.

According to the PHD Chamber, though the Transport Authority charges Rs.4,500 per annum currently, the buses were parked on road sides and since nearly 4,000 buses were to be added before the Commonwealth Games in 2010 through corporate initiative, parking of existing as well as the new fleet of buses was a major concern.

Fare fixation which is at present regulated by the State Government was another area of concern included in the action plan. As the DTC is subsidised by the Delhi Government it would be desirable to have a fare structure that ensures viability of the new scheme, said the PHD Chamber. Other suggestions incorporated in the action plan included setting up of driver’s training institutes and ensuring that permit conditions for regulating bus services were in the interest of the operators and safety of passengers.

PHD Chamber president of L.K. Malhotra apprised Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna of these concerns and said the Delhi Government’s initiative to provide a safe, reliable and efficient bus service could be successful if these problems were addressed.
