HUBLI: The Gadag police arrested eight persons, reportedly supporters of mine owner Anil Lad, and seized 42 bullets, 50 lathis and four vehicles, at Hallikeri checkpost in Gadag district on Sunday. Gadag Superintendent of Police D. Roopa told The Hindu over phone from Gadag that Rs. 8.34 lakh in cash and 12 mobile handsets were recovered from the arrested persons. She said while Rs. 7.47 lakh cash was found in one car, the arrested persons had Rs. 87,000 with them. She said among the arrested persons, the drivers were Kannada-speaking people while the rest were from north India. AdmissionMs. Roopa said the arrested had admitted that they were going to Kalaghatgi from Bellary and had a few photographs of Mr. Anil Lad taken during family functions. She said the arrested persons had admitted that they were going Kalghatgi to help Santosh Lad in his election canvassing. She said the police were searching for weapons that might have been concealed in the vehicles. The Gadag police have registered case under section 171(e) of IPC (bribery in connection with elections).
