Special team to probe firing incident

KOCHI: A special police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police of the District Crime Records Bureau, Aluva, P.A. Abraham will probe the chain of incidents at the Aluva Circle Inspector’s office on Saturday when Himaval Maheshwara Bhadrananda, who was arrested on Friday and later released on bail, fired two shots from his pistol.

Rural Superintendent of Police P M. Padmanabhan said the Dy.SP had been directed to submit the report within two weeks. A charge sheet will be issued after collecting necessary evidence.

It is learnt that the gun licence was issued by the then District Collector based on a recommendation by the former Additional District Magistrate A.K. Thankappan, despite an adverse police report. City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham said the police had recommended against giving him gun licence, “considering his not-so-good history.” A few months ago, Bhadrananda had slashed his body using a sharp weapon while in Kochi.

District Collector M. Beena has been asked to submit a report to the State government on how the licence was issued despite an adverse police report. The then ADM made the recommendation overlooking the fact that Bhadrananda did not have a favourable report from the Divisional Forest Officer and the police.

Ballistic experts have collected evidence to build a case against Bhadrananda, who has been remanded to the Aluva sub-jail for 14 days following the firing.
