Hot destination: A large number of people throng the beach road by all modes of transport to get some respite from the simmering heat and haze in the city on Sunday. — VISAKHAPATNAM: The hot weather continued to cast its grim spell over the region with temperatures reaching a new high on Sunday at 43 degrees C. Dry westerlies have been sweeping across the region. This is the main reason for the rising temperature, according to the weather officials. The city and neighbouring regions have been in the grip of a hot spell for the past few days with temperatures crossing way above the 40-degree mark. The highest maximum temperature was recorded in Kakinada at 45.9 degree C. In many interior parts of the State, the absence of thunderstorms has contributed to the increase in the temperature while, in coastal areas, the delayed onset of sea breeze is cited as a factor. Weather officials say that the prevailing heat wave conditions over some parts of Coastal Andhra are likely to abate during next 48 hours. Though last year May received a good quota of summer rains, thunderstorms seem to elude this season.
