CHENNAI: The Customs Department at the Chennai airport has recorded a growth of almost of 50 per cent in the value of mango export in the last financial year.
C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs (Airport), said that during 2006-07, mangoes worth Rs. 2.09 crore were exported through the Chennai air cargo complex, with the export value being Rs. 4.03 crore.
So far this season, mangoes worth Rs. 28 lakh had been exported since April this year.
The export begins in the last week of April and goes on till July-end. Initially, ‘Banganapally,’ one of the common varieties, is exported. From Chennai, the fruits are exported to nearly 40 countries, including Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium and Brunei.
D. Prabhu, an exporter, said that the unexpected rain in February and March had brought down the yield this season.
At the outset of the mango season, Mr. Prabhu’s company exports ‘Banganapally,’ and then ‘Imam Pasandh’ and Alphonso. After June, ‘Neelam’ is exported.
