CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who was admitted to a private hospital for treatment of severe backache and neck pain on May 16, was discharged on Sunday evening. He was given physiotherapy to relieve the pain and to strengthen his neck and back muscles.

Though Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan had advised partymen and others not to disturb the Chief Minister, he had a steady flow of visitors.

On Sunday, DMK’s Union Ministers, State Ministers, CPI’s national secretary D. Raja and CPI (M) central committee member W.R. Varadha Rajan and many others called on him in the hospital.

Cho S. Ramaswamy, editor Tughlaq, met him at his residence. “When I called his secretary Mr Shanmuganathan to visit him in the hospital I was told that he was on his way home. So I called on him at his residence. It was a pleasant meeting. We spent more than 20 minutes discussing various issues,” Mr Cho told The Hindu. The two had met at a marriage a few months ago. The anguish expressed by the Chief Minister last week struck a chord in him and he decided to call on Mr. Karunanidhi.
