PUDUCHERRY: The chemical industry and Information Technology sector in the Union Territory have registered an impressive growth from October 2007 to March 2008, according to a survey conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Southern Region. The report which was released to the press on Friday said that the chemical industry had witnessed around 30 per cent increase in production, which in turn resulted in 30 per cent increase in sales and 40 per cent growth in exports. The capacity utilisation had gone up by 32 per cent and the value of production increased by another 20 per cent. The survey also predicted that the chemical industry would perform well from April to September 2008. A likely increase in demand by 30 to 40 per cent was expected to push the sales by 20 to 30 per cent and production by 15 to 20 per cent during the period. The exports are likely to go up by 30 to 40 per cent during the same period, it said. Lack of manpower, uninterrupted power supply and flexible procedural norms for setting up new units are some the key concerns of industry, the survey said. As regards Information Technology, the revenue had gone up by 20 to 40 per cent and the overseas billing by around 11 per cent during October 2007-March 2008. Manpower utilisation had grown by 10 per cent and a 7 per cent increase in price had seen profit margin increase by 10 per cent. Like the chemical industry, the survey has predicted a 40 to 50 per cent increase in demand for IT-enabled services during April-September 2008. With the demand going up, the revenue and overseas billing is expected to go up. In the IT sector too, the industry finds it difficult to get the right talent from the Union Territory.
