Trade unions to prevent dumping Chief Minister’s convenience awaited
KOCHI: Segregated waste from the city can be treated at the Brahmapuram plant though it has not been formally inaugurated. This possibility opened by the civic authorities has allayed fears that the waste movement from the city may be affected as the trade unions in the FACT had stated that they would not permit the dumping of waste at Ambalamedu beyond 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Kochi Corporation authorities had earlier announced that the plant would be inaugurated on May 18. However, the inauguration has been postponed as the civic authorities are reportedly waiting for a convenient date for the Chief Minister to inaugurate the plant. The Trade Unions had adopted this stand at a conciliatory meeting convened by the district collector that they would not permit the dumping of waste beyond the deadline. A recent high-level meeting of the civic authorities attended by Kochi Mayor Mercy Williams, had taken a decision to send segregated waste at the plant without waiting for the inauguration. The inauguration of the plant is a mere formality and nothing should prevent the treatment of the segregated waste at the plant as it has become fully functional. The waste generated from the city can very well be treated at the plant and there is no need to take it to Ambalamedu any more, said Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar. A full-fledged trial run of the plant was conducted on Friday. According to District Collector Dr. M. Beena, the dumping of waste at Ambalamedu might be continued till the inauguration of the plant. “The continuation of dumping of waste at Ambalamedu is now a matter of hardly one or two days and we don’t expect any resistance to the suggestion. The civic authorities are waiting for the date of the guest for inaugurating the plant,” Dr. Beena said.
