Soak in the beauty of the hills

A DTPC tour package offers visits to important sites in Kozhikode city and the verdant hills of Wayanad.

If you have not explored the prime tourist spots in the city of Kozhikode and experienced the bewitching splendour of the verdant hill district of Wayanad, the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has the right plan for you — a comprehensive tour package at an affordable outlay. The tour, organised in alliance with a travel agency, is planned in three segments — Kozhikode City tour, South and North Wayanad packages.

The city tour, a one-day affair on Wednesdays, will start at 8 a.m. from the DTPC premises and end at the same venue at 7 p.m. Both the options of the Wayanad package will be operated on alternative Saturdays, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The City package will include visits to prominent sites, beaches and the lush green countryside, giving a feel of the unique cultural flavour and warm hospitality of the city. The itinerary comprises the ‘Uru’ (indigenous ship) building yard in Beypore, the famous 14th century ‘Mishkal Masji’ at Kuttichira, the Marine Research Aquarium, Pazhassiraja Museum & Krishna Menon Museum, kalaripayattu destinations, Kappad Beach and the ‘Mother of God’ Church built by the Portuguese, besides S.M. Street, as a shopping spot. The trip costs Rs.225 for adults and Rs.175 for children (between four and 12), inclusive of all entrance fees. “The members should meet the expense for food,” say the organisers.

The Wayanad circuit covers the mist-clad hill stations, sprawling spice plantations, luxuriant forests and some rich cultural destinations. The South Wayanad tour includes the Pookode Lake, Soojippara waterfalls, Edakkal Caves, Heritage Museum and Karapuzha Dam besides the 14-km. Ghat section. The North Wayanad package has the Banasura Sagar Dam, Pazhassi Tomb and the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary as major attractions besides the Ghat section and the pristine Pookod Lake. The Wayanad trips cost Rs. 400 (for adults) and 300 (for children).

DTPC secretary B. Anand told The Hindu that the Tourism Council was resolved to take the venture ahead braving hurdles that might crop up in the initial stage.

The project will start with a City tour on May 21.
