New role for local bodies?

NEW DELHI: The government is planning to involve local bodies, particularly panchayati raj institutions, to take social security schemes to workers in the informal sector.

Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes said the social security network had to be expanded to protect interests of millions employed in less secure jobs such as outsourcing and construction.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Asia Pacific Regional Meeting of Socially-Inclusive Strategies to Extend Social Security Coverage here on Monday,
