Encroachments removed on the banks of Pallavakial

Eviction drive: An earthmover removing encroachments.

PUDUCHERRY: Officials from the Departments of Public Works and Revenue on Monday removed around 250 huts built on the banks of Pallavakial near Kamban Nagar at Reddiarpalayam.

Officials in the Irrigation wing of the PWD said these huts were put up illegally during the first week of June.

They said the encroachment would have had severe impact on the flow of excess water from Ousteri Lake to Ouzhandai tank through the Pallavakial and hence it was removed.

Though the owners of the huts resisted the attempt to evict them from the place, officials with the support of a huge posse of police deployed from the South region removed the sheds.

While officials pointed out that those who have built up the huts already own houses at Ajis Nagar at Reddiarpalayam, the hut dwellers said they were yet to have proper dwelling units.

Former Member of the Legislative Assembly A. M. Krishnamurthy, who represented Reddiarpalayam constituency, also supported the hut dwellers claim. This resulted in an argument between Mr. Krishnamurthy and the officials from the Revenue Department.

However, the team went ahead with the demolition drive without any trouble. The team was led by V. Sathiyamurthy, executive engineer, PWD, Irrigation wing and M. S Ramesh, Tahsildar of Oulgaret Taluk office.
