New Delhi: The statue of saint and Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar installed at West Block in R.K. Puram was on Sunday shifted to the Delhi Tamil Sangam premises as per an order passed by the sub-divisional magistrate, Vasant Vihar. The statue was originally installed in 1975 in a corner of open land inside the West Block. After a compound wall was erected around the West Block, the statue got isolated because of lack of maintenance and construction of a boundary wall and a toilet near it. The Sangam had represented to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to allow it to shift the statue to its premises. An application in this regard was also made to the SDM, who ordered the shifting of the statue from the existing site to the premises of the Sangam in its entirety. Accordingly, on Sunday the statue, along with the foundation stone with the names of dignitaries inscribed in it, was removed from the present location without causing any damage. With the help of civil engineers and others, the statue was installed immediately on the Sangam premises under the supervision of the Tamil Sangam president and secretary, M.N. Krishnamani and R. Mukunthan. Formal inaugurationMr. Mukunthan told The Hindu that the statue would soon be formally inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, in the presence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Mrs. Sheila Dikshit.
