MUMBAI: Notwithstanding a hard-fought 79-move loss to Uzbek youngster Anton Filipov, Poland’s Michal Krasenkow topped a six-way tie to win the Mayor’s Cup International Open chess title here on Monday. Rarely have the top eight boards produced decisive battles in the final round of an Open event in India. As a result, second seed K. Humpy managed to justify her seeding following a 27-move victory over M.S. Thejkumar. Ziaur Rahman, Abhijit Kunte, Filipov and Saidali Iuldachev finished in that order behind Humpy after six players tied for the title with nine points from 11 rounds.
