KSEB goes for restrictions in supply

Special Correspondent

The situation is likely to continue till Moozhiyar power house is repaired

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Peak hour restrictions in electricity supply were reported in some parts of the State on Monday following the disruption in power generation at the Moozhiyar power house in Pathanamthitta district and an unexpected fall in the State’s quota of power from the Central grid.

The restrictions were reported in Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts and some parts of Kollam district in the initial hours of Monday night. It was likely to be extended to more areas later in the night, a top official in the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) said.

The KSEB has urged the consumers, especially those who draw heavily from the State grid, to reduce the use of electricity during the peak evening hours (between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.). The KSEB’s ability to avoid restrictions in power supply in more areas of the State will depend on the cooperation it gets from the consumers.

Average demand in electricity during the peak hours now is in the range of 2,700 MW. The maximum quantum of power available in the State grid on Monday evening was 2,528 MW, the official said.

The blast at the Moozhiyar generation station on Friday has resulted in the stoppage of power generation at that station and also the generation stations at Kakkad and Maniyar downstream the Pampa. These stations could together generate 266 MW.

The State’s quota of power from the Central grid in the recent weeks was in the range of 1,050 MW. It fell drastically on Monday to the level of 724 MW due to some problems at the power stations at Ramagundam in Andhra Pradesh, Thalchar in Orissa and Neyveli in Tamil Nadu. The problems at these places are of a nature that the shortfall in receipt of power from the Central grid might last for a few days. The outlook at the moment is that the whole of Kerala, or parts of it, might experience load-shedding till the power generation at Moozhiyar station is restored, the official said.
