Adivasis to press for ST status: Murmu

Guwahati: The Adivasi community will press for their demand for granting ST status with the Centre, president of the Jharkhand Disom Party and chief convenor of the Joint Adivasi Action Committee, Salkhan Murmu said here on Monday. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Murmu said his party’s delegation on Sunday night met Assam Governor Lt. Gen. (retd) Ajai Singh and urged him to move the Centre to grant ST status to the Adivasis. The Adivasis since long have been demanding ST status but “due a conspiracy hatched at the behest of vested interests” this has been not granted”, Mr. Murmu, a former MP, said. The delegation, he said, has also urged the Governor to order a CBI probe into the violent incident at the Beltola area last year in which one adivasis girl was paraded naked during a rally to demand ST status.
