On April 29, there was a crowd to take a holy both in 22 theerthams in the Rameswaram temple. Each devotee has to pay Rs.7 to the Devasthanam for taking bath and Rs.10 to certain persons who appeared to be nominated for fetching water from the theerthams and pouring water on devotees. Receipt is being issued by the Devasthanam for Rs.7 only. No receipt is issued for the service charges. The service man demanded additional Rs.30 per head as service charge to take bath in remaining 18 theerthams. Most of the devotees who are to fulfil offerings are not in a position to meet extra expenses. There is a notice board asking pilgrims to lodge complaints with the Devasthanam. But there seems to be no fruitful solution. A.S. Natarajan, Madurai. Give priorityThe State Government has proposed to set up industrial estate in Kanyakumari, Dindigul and Theni districts. Ramanathapuram district is the most backward district than these ones. There is absolutely no industry in the district. There are so many entrepreneurs in Ramanathapuram and Kilakkarai areas who would set up units in the estate. There also lot of unemployed youths in these areas and they can be employed. Hence, the Government is requested to give top priority to the district and start an industrial estate. G. Nagasamy, Ramanathapuram. Avoid ‘line loss’Electricity Minister has stated that only 54 per cent of the power is paid by consumers, 28 per cent towards free supply to farmers and 18 per cent towards ‘line loss.’ When most modern gadgets are available to curb ‘line loss,’ why the Government is unable to save the precious power from wastage? The ‘line loss’ should be made bare minimum so that the available power could be further utilised. Asmabagh Anvardeen, Ramanathapuram. Elusive BG lineThe Minister of State for Railways R. Velu is said to have stated (The Hindu, May 10) that the Tiruvarur-Nagore Broad Gauge Conversion work was over and the Katpadi-Vellore section ready. He indicated the time-limit for various ongoing gauge conversion projects: Nagore-Velankanni, Vellore-Tiruvannamalai, Tiruvannamalai-Villupuram stretches. But, sadly he did not say a word about the completion of the gauge conversion work on the Tiruchi-Manamadurai stretch. Earlier, he had expressed the hope that this track would be thrown open to traffic as a pongal gift for the people of this region. But his hope has not materialised. G.K.S. Kandasubramanian, Sivaganga. Complete Sethu projectIt seems that alleged Adam’s bridge (Ramar Sethu) is a sand deposit caused by material calamity as there is no evidence to prove it is manmade. In the absence of findings from archaeological survey that Ramar Sethu should be declared as a national monument, any proposal to alter the alignment of Sethusamudram shipping channel project or abandon the entire project is a waste of country’s resources as about 60 per cent of the project work is said to have been already completed. R. Govindarajan, Sivaganga.
