Teachers lay siege to counselling centre

Staff Reporter

They condemn “irregularities and gross violation” of guidelines in transfer of teachers through general counselling

THENI: Hundreds of teachers and members of Primary Teachers’ Association laid a siege to a counselling centre in Block Resource Centre of Sarva Siksha Abhyan for two hours here on Monday, condemning irregularities and gross violation of guidelines in transfer of teachers through general counselling. Problems commenced on the first day of four-day sessions.

Counselling for transfer of middle school headmasters, graduate teachers, BT teachers had been conducted in the presence of District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO) Aruna Devi. Fourteen persons got transfer orders.

Participants raised the issue when some teachers opted for a maths teacher post at Aranmanaipudhur middle school in Theni union. Counselling session officials said that the post was already allotted to a teacher in some other district.

But functionaries of Primary School Teachers’ Associations strongly protested this and demanded that this post must be given to teachers who sought transfer within union only.

Teachers in Theni union must be given the first chance to choose this post.

Officials replied that that Director of Education had issued order in this connection. It must be executed.

But functionaries alleged that this was a gross violation of general transfer counselling guidelines.

The order must be cancelled as it was issued before counselling.

The matter should be brought to the knowledge of the Director for suitable modifications.

They stalled all the proceedings of the session for two hours.

Meanwhile, police and educational officials attempted to pacify agitators.

The association member insisted that such thing should not happen in future and counselling must be done as per government guidelines only.

If the guidelines were not followed properly, they warned, members would engage in big strike in the coming sessions.

Counselling for transfer of promoted headmasters and elementary school headmasters would be held on Tuesday . Counselling for transfer of teachers within the union would be held on May 21, between unions within in the district on May 22 and between districts on May 23.
