Compensate victims

Nowadays acquittals of accused in sensational murder cases are rampant. We have inherited British system of jurisprudence by which all benefits of doubt go to the accused. A hundred accused can go scotfree but one innocent person should not be punished _ a noble principle indeed. At the same time, we should not forget that it is the duty of the state to protect the life, liberty and property of every citizen. Therefore, in every case where the accused is acquitted, whatever the reason behind it, the victims and affected parties should be adequately compensated by the state because of its failure to book the real culprit and prove the case.

More bogies needed

Tiruchi-Erode passenger train, which leaves Tiruchi at 7 a.m. and reaches Karur around 9 a.m. on a daily basis, is a boon to working people and college and school students hailing from Tiruchi and Karur. Since its arrival time at Karur is suited for office-goers, all the compartments in this train are always crowded. I appeal to the railway authorities to attach more bogies so as to enable commuters to travel comfortably.

Desilt tank

The water tank near the Sengipatti bus stop on the Thanjavur-Tiruchi highway is an eyesore and proves a health hazard. Proper maintenance of this tank would immense benefit cattle and in recharging the ground water in the surrounding areas during the summer months. The irony is that the office of the Sanoorapattin panchayat is situated on the banks of the tank. I request the panchayat head to take steps to desilt the tank and strengthen the bunds.

Switch on streetlights

A large number of people residing in the innumerable colonies on the Medical College Road use the road leading to the New Bus stand via Municipal Colony round the clock. Though the Thanjavur Municipality has installed street lights on this road, they are not being switched on during night. Due to this, the people returning homes in the late night hours from the new bus stand have to suffer a lot. I request the Thanjavur Municipality to do the needful.

Promise unkept

Railway Minster had announced in the Budget the extension of Kumbakonam-Coimbatore Jan Shatabdi Express to Mayiladuturai. But even after three months, the announcement has remained only on paper. The extension of Jan Shatabdi to Mayiladuturai was the only proposal announced in the budget that could be implemented forthwith. But the Tiruchi Division officials have not taken any initiative so far. There was no need for any new coaches. This shows how fast our bureaucrats work to fulfil the announcements made in the interest of the travelling public.

G.D.Inian,

Summer train

I thank the Railways for introducing a weekly summer special train from Tiruchi to Manduadih (near Varanasi) via Chennai, leaving Tiruchi on Thursday morning.

As this train will be very useful to the people of the central districts visiting North India, I request the Railways to make this service a permanent one.

Stitch in time…

With reference to the news that the Nagapattinam Municipality has decided to take effective steps to collect property and other tax arrears (The Hindu, 1.5.2008), I wish to state that the State Government had already ordered that all tax arrears for more than a year should be listed out and defaulters’ list should be sent to the concerned assessees by registered post with a request to remit the tax immediately. Had these orders been strictly implemented and compliance ensured by Regional Directors of Municipal Administration during their inspections, arrears running into crores of rupees for several decades would not have accumulated at all.

R.S. Moorthy,

Karur

Strengthen rural telecom network

BSNL should pay more attention and give priority to develop the rural mobile network service. Wherever I try to contact rural numbers, I have to face failure. As Mahatma Gandhi pointed out, India’s development depends on the development of her villages.

Therefore, I appeal to the Minister for Telecommunication to give suitable instruction to his department to concentrate on the rural network before any private company takes the lead.

K. Santhanam,

Kumbakonam
