Farmers protest

TUMKUR: About 50 farmers from Chirathahalli and Veeraganahalli in Sira taluk of Tumkur district staged a demonstration in front of the Karnataka Industrial Cooperative Bank in Tumkur on Monday in protest against what they described as the “high-handedness of bank officials in recovering loans from two farmers”. Satish Kenkere, an office-bearer of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, said that the farmers had been expecting the loans to be waived under the Centre’s loan-waiver scheme but the bank had processed the sale of the lands that belonged to the two farmers by a public auction. The bank’s manager, Chandrashekar had met the farmers and insisted that they pay at least a part of the loan. The farmers had refused the offer. — Staff Correspondent
