‘Bring back Amrit Paul to Bellary’

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: Police officials in Bellary district have expressed displeasure over the transfer of Superintendent of Police Amrit Paul by the Election Commission and have demanded that he be brought back to the post.

In a memorandum submitted to Deputy Commissioner Arvind Srivastav, Additional Superintendent of Police F.A. Trasgar said that the sudden transfer of Mr. Paul had come as a shock to them.

Mr. Paul had instilled confidence in police personnel to discharge their duty efficiently in order to ensure free and fair elections.

It was under his leadership that Rs. 11.11 crore and property worth Rs. 38.4 lakh were seized, and anti-social elements taken into custody, the memorandum said.

It was on May 15 that Mr. Paul, according to the recommendations of the Election Commission, was suspended. The “punishment” was later modified as transfer on the charge that he was “unable to handle the situation impartially” in connection with the attempt-to-murder case booked against Sriramulu, BJP candidate for Bellary (Rural), and had failed to arrest the latter.

The memorandum said that the action initiated against Mr. Paul had demoralised the rank and file in the district police.

After the development, the police personnel were feeling insecure, it said.
