Bangalore: The Bangalore Association for Science Education (BASE) is conducting several activity-based summer programmes covering a wide age group of students. The programmes comprise activities such as lecture-demonstrations, discussion-based interactive sessions and working on computers. The summer programmes began on April 17 and will continue till May 24. Over the past few weeks, a variety of courses were covered such as the Tiny-Tots programme, the Science Camp, XPLORE, Universe in a Classroom and From the Web of Life to the Universe. The last programme, with a workshop that introduces astronomy, is now being conducted. “The aim of the organisation is to help students who are interested in science. We don’t discourage students who learn about the course late and wish to join in between,” said B.S. Shylaja, senior scientific officer, BASE. “We are doing this to encourage people to know more about the latest inventions in science and about the institutes that have dedicated themselves to scientific study. We began a three-year course called Research Education Advancement Programme (REAP). This programme will be conducted concurrently with normal college education.” “From the Web of Life to the Universe,” is a three-week programme for college students. It is aimed at motivating pre-university and B.Sc. students to conduct research work in physics and life sciences. Lectures for these courses are given by senior practising scientists from research institutes. The lectures will introduce students to the latest developments in the frontiers of scientific research in various fields. Special lectures by medical practitioners about the relevance of physics and biology to medical sciences is also being included. This programme began on May 5 and will continue till May 23. “Introduction to Astronomy” is a five-day workshop conducted for teachers aimed at helping them impart concepts to students. The workshop will include movies, interactive sessions and experiments. This programme will be conducted in two batches. The next batch is scheduled to begin on May 20 and will continue till May 24.
