CHENAI: A row of shops at Chintadaripet MRTS railway station was demolished by Southern Railway authorities on Monday as the lease period for these shops was terminated by a court order.

According to a Southern Railway official, these shops were given on lease to a contractor for a three-year period. After the lease period was over, the Southern Railway administration asked the contractor to vacate the shops.

But the contractor went to the court and got extension of the lease. After a prolonged legal battle, the court gave an order favouring the railway administration.

Following the order, the administration demolished the shops.

The source said another row of shops in the railway station was leased out to another contractor and the administration had taken legal steps to get them vacated.
