Tie-up for new courses in hospitality, tourism

Staff Correspondent

Postgraduate degree in International Hospitality, Tourism Management launched on Monday

Manipal: The Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration (WGSHA), a constituent of Manipal University, has tied up with the Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) in the U.K., for globalising its select academic programmes in hospitality and tourism. As part of this collaboration, the president of Manipal University, T. Ramdas Pai, launched a post-graduate course in “International Hospitality and Tourism Management” (M.Sc) here on Monday.

Chief administrator of WGSHA B.N. Kaul said The Manipal University–SHU partnership would provide Indian students with an opportunity to study in the U.K. and it would be operational from this year.

The programmes that have been agreed upon by the signatories of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) are two-fold. Students doing their degree in Hotel Management at WGSHA would join the final year of the B.Sc. (Hons) International Hotel Management at Sheffield.

Two stages

The WGSHA would award a diploma course after three years of study and the students would then be awarded the SHU degree following their one-year of study at Sheffield. Students could avail scholarships in this course. The second part of the collaboration is a split-masters proposal. The WGSHA will offer the first stage of the M.Sc. in International Hospitality and Tourism Management and the M.Sc. in International Hospitality Management courses in India. This will be the certificate stage of the course. Students will then be transferred to Sheffield for the second diploma-level stage to complete the dissertation, either in Sheffield or in India.

Scholarships

Two scholarships worth 1,500 Great Britain Pounds would be offered in the first year of this course, Mr. Kaul said.

Thrust on research

Pro-chancellor of Manipal University H.S. Balla said that the future programmes would include joint and split doctoral degrees between Manipal University and SHU.

The Manipal University would promote doctoral and research programmes too.

Top ranking

The WGSHA had been ranked the top institution in hotel management in the U.K. for two successive years by a survey, he said.

Principal lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University Susan Horner, pro-vice chancellor of Manipal University S.S. Pabla, registrar G.K. Prabhu, and executive director (Planning) H. Vinod Bhat were present.

More details about the WGSHA-SHU academic programmes could be had from the SHU Country Manager Kalpana Das in person or through his cellphone: 9810991456
