Separate place

I was pleasantly surprised to find separate partitioned rooms for mothers to breastfeed at Ernakulam Railway station’s first and second class waiting hall. The declining habit of mothers’ breastfeeding infants needs special provisions like this to boost the same. I request the authorities of Tiruchi Railway station to kindly provide separate partition for mothers to feel comfortable and feed their children.

Attach more bogies

The Tiruchi-Erode Passenger train which leaves Tiruchi at 7 a.m. and reaches Karur at around 9 a.m. on daily basis is a boon to working people, college and school going students. Since its arrival time at Karur is tailor-made to office-goers, all compartments are always over loaded with commuters. I appeal to the railway authorities to attach more bogies to this train so as to enable commuters to travel without any hindrance.

Extend train service

The Railway Minster had announced in the budget the extension of Kumbakonam-Coimbatore Jan Shatabdi Express to Mayiladuturai. It was the only proposal announced in the budget that could be implemented forthwith. But the Tiruchi Division officials have not taken any initiative so far. There was no need for any new coaches. It is just matter of paper works. But even after three months the announcement has remained only on the paper. This attitude shows how fast our bureaucrats work to fulfil the announcements made in the interest of the travelling public.

Exorbitant charges

ICICI bank in their April statement has advised that if cash is deposited in the drop box meant for cheques, customers will be charged Rs.300 and Rs.500 for repeated droppings. The above charges are exorbitant and unilateral and defeat the very purpose of freeing the farmers and villagers from the money-lenders by the government opening new bank branches in rural areas.

Maintain temples

There are many famous primeval temples in Tiruchi, which are considered as a great treasure and a symbol of ethos and ethnicity. But there are lack of maintenance and facilities in the temple. Devotees and tourists are exasperated by insalubrious and filthy surroundings. I request the authorities concerned to take proper measures to conserve the temple.

Implement properly

This refers to the news ‘Corporation decides to appoint Contractors’ (May 3). Much is said than done as far as Tiruchi Corporation is concerned regarding underground drainage scheme. This scheme was launched around 1970 when Tiruchi was a municipality. Whatever the civic officials say the woes of the city residents are not over. Day by day it is increasing. The streets of Srirangam are crying because of the indiscriminate digging. The proof of the pudding is in eating and not in the explanation

Relay dug up roads

I complained through these columns two months back about the highly bad condition of roads with deep, uneven dug up pits and mounds and the frequent digging of the already laid roads in the by-lanes and streets in Ranga Nagar areas especially those in Rajaji Street, South Devi Street, Seshadripuram and Subramaniapuram Street. The situation is worst with the pedestrian and vehicles unable to pass through without resorting to acrobatic talents. It is the duty of the district and Tiruchi Corporation to arrange for the relaying of the roads on a war footing.

Do not raise tax

Chief Minister’s latest announcement that it is not compulsory for local bodies to raise property tax now has come as a whiff of fresh air to all. Let the Tiruchi Corporation complete ongoing projects to fruition by plugging leakage of project funds in all imaginable ways. Let the councillors and Mayor ponder over their duties to the people before levying any tax.

No response

No one is responding when we contact 132 for enquiry at Tiruchi Reservation Centre. This system has to be immediately changed. For each and every thing we cannot go in person and enquire. Why can’t the Railway authorities open one or two enquiry counters exclusively appointing people/officials to respond to public enquiries? People get fed up and irritated whenever they contact the No.132. Authorities should take immediate steps to set right this problem.

Pay Commission report

It is not understood why the Central Government is still mum about the VI Pay Commission. No information of its release and implementation. But the cost of living is going up day by day. It is the duty of the government to implement the pay commission without any further delay when the prices of the commodities are high.

Honour undertaking

The recent clarification of Railway Board is that payment of medical allowance of Rs.100 per month to its pensioners after getting an undertaking that he/she is residing beyond 2.5 km from railway dispensary as already ordered by it, is absolute. Grievance of pensioners is that some railway pension disburser banks/post offices do not honour the undertakings given by them.

More lighting needed

After the huge advertisement hoardings came down as per Supreme Court’s verdict, many arterial roads in the Tiruchi city have lost its brightness in night hours. The high voltage focus lamps provided for hoardings helped the road users a lot, as in some roads the road side lamps are not well lit due to either hidden by trees or that they are inappropriate to the width of the road, for instance, Thillainagar Main Road and Royal Road connecting the Central Bus-stand. Such arterial roads in the city should be well lit on either sides and one more high mast sodium vapour lamp should be installed in Chatram Bus Stand near Kamarajar statue and in Central Bus Stand near the old closed entrance.

The stretch between Khajamalai and Mannarpuram of Simco Meter Road is a major link road. This is used by the residents of various colonies. The area is dark and especially where roads are dug, not even a single light is burning for a long time. Motorists find it very difficult to cross. In one location, slight diversion is to be taken around a lamp post and again join the main road. This is a dangerous area where one lamp post is available. Due to poor visibility, there is every possibility that the motorist will hit the post. Hence, adequate lighting is required in this area to avoid accidents.

Strengthen fences

Of late buses/lorries falling down from the bridges killing many people has become the order of the day. The main reason is that the government which is investing crores of rupees in building bridges is not ready to invest on building fences on the bridges.

Invariably all the bridges have been provided with two-and-half feet concrete fencings which are not at all serving the purpose. The old Cauvery bridge fencing is an ideal one.

It is imperative that the fences of the bridges should be made of steel girders and the height should be at least 6 feet. Then only the vehicles accidentally hitting them will not fall down from the bridges.

Tree felling

Apropos of the letter (V. Rajagopalan, dated April 29) on virtual desert like conditions prevailing on the NH-45 stretch due to road widening works and consequent indiscriminate felling of trees. The Madras High Court recently directed the Chennai Corporation to plant 50 saplings for every tree it axed. Further the court held if transplanted trees die or decay, 50 saplings must be planted for every tree. This ruling is applicable for all other areas and agencies too and should not be treated as an isolated one applicable only to a particular area. But, the authorities in charge of the road widening works are seemingly oblivious to the subject ruling and are going about their task of felling trees. It is high time the government took up this issue in all seriousness.

Write it boldly

In most of the bus shelters in Tiruchi, the names of the State Transport Corporation, TMC and commercial ads are written in bold letters and that of the stopping is in small letters. In some of these facilities, the name of the stopping is not at all found. It is difficult for passengers, especially the elders to find out the name of the stopping. It will be most useful, if the name of the stopping is written in big letters.
