The hype and publicity given to top rankers in school final examination is affecting the minds of a large number of fellow students. In fact a majority score average or just above average marks and they are being looked upon as dull students. This approach by the society may tend to develop inferiority complex in the minds of other students. Very often we come across instances of students taking extreme steps, unable to withstand the pressure. Parent Teacher Associations can form a core group in each school and give free counselling and guidance to such students. At no point of time students should lose heart. T. Srinivasa Rengan, Madurai. Water supplyIt is deplorable that Madurai Corporation, though as an experimental measure, has indulged in privatising distribution of water supply in certain wards. The move is sure to be fraught with several ills to the citizens as no proper accountability in terms of regularity in supply, quality and above all, collection of charges from the consumers. It is already experienced by them in their day-to-day life with regard to collection of undue fees by the contractors/lessees of markets, parking lots, pay-and-use type public convenience, etc. Moreover, water supply is one of the elementary statutory functions of the local bodies and in a matter like the very basic and essential need of the citizens. Municipalities and panchayats, clamouring for more powers and autonamy, cannot abdicate their responsibilities which dilutes the concept of self-governance. K. Muthiah, Executive Trustee, Consortium For Consumer Justice, Madurai. Parking of buses, autosTraffic jam is being made all the time by the drivers of city buses, mini-buses, autos and share autos. City buses are not properly stopped near the bus-shelter and especially mini-buses stop at all the places whenever there is a signal from the public to stop and auto and share auto drivers are scrupulously stopping their vehicles near bus-shelters. In order to avoid these sequences, traffic police should be posted near the important bus-shelters to regulate the city buses and mini bus drivers should be restricted to stop other than the bus-shelter and strict action should be taken against the auto drivers if they park their vehicles near the bus-shelter. R.G. Rethinam Madurai. Coach confusionI wish to bring the following discomfort experienced by me on May 11, 2008 while boarding Train No.2642 (Thirukkural Express). I along with my family members were allotted the following seats: coach No.SE6 - 56, SE 3 – 53, 54, S3 – 25. The coach number sheets were not pasted till 6.45 p.m. and the train departed at 7 p.m. Passenger lists were affixed on wrong compartments by S3 – on SE3 coach and vice versa. I am aged 61 and had to run from back to front. When contacted, the TTR told me “Why you reserved in this train.” Southern Railway’s performance is excellent and I request the authorities to regularise the system so as to improve customer convenience. C. Subramanian, Madurai. Cleanliness at Eco ParkRecently, I went to he Eco Park for a morning walk. I saw pop corn papers, water bottles, ice cream cups, paper plates thrown here and there on the lawn. Many dustbins are there. But people never use them. I request, the Corporation authorities to educate the people throw public address system inside the park. B. Nandhini, Madurai.
