COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore College Old Students’ Association (of the Government Arts College) has asked the State Government not to confer the college the status of a university. According to association secretary T. Srinivasan, the decision of the Government to convert the Government Arts College into a university was not welcome. It would affect the education prospects of the economically and socially weaker students and tribals. He has expressed apprehension with regard to the revision of fee structure. “Now as many as 6,000 students are studying in the shift system. For this the Government has not made provisions for proper drinking water, toilets, security, infrastructure and auditorium. It should concentrate on these areas rather than giving it the status of a university,” he said in a release. The secretary has suggested establishment of new universities instead of converting the existing colleges. This would reduce the number of Government-run institutions, he has opined. The association, along with students, would continue the protest if the Government did not withdraw its decision, he warned.
