PUDUCHERRY: The Red Ribbon Express that spreads awareness of the need to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS across the country will halt here on June 7 and 8. Flagged off on December 1, 2007, the train has been dedicated to carry information to create HIV/AIDS awareness, besides offering counsel and cultural programmes. It will arrive at the Puducherry station after visiting Villupuram. After this, it is expected to halt at Vriddhachalam. “The idea of the Red Ribbon Express is to create awareness of HIV/AIDS, highlighting prevention, especially in rural areas. The train has seven coaches,” Gilbert Fernandez, Project Director of Pondicherry AIDS Control Society (PACS), said. The first three coaches consist of exhibitions providing information through touch-screen, 3-D modules, reading materials and films. “In the fourth coach, interactive sessions with government departments will be held. Resource persons, who are travelling in the train, will interact with each department such as Education, Social Welfare, Labour and also self-help groups,” he said. A tentative schedule for the meetings had been prepared at a meeting of the coordination committee, with the Collector in the chair.
