Cargo ship hijacked

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: A cargo ship, m.v. Victoria, manned mainly by Indian crew has been hijacked off Somalia. The ship had lost shore contact on Sunday morning.

Shipping sources here said that it had set sail for Somalia from Mumbai about a fortnight ago after loading 4,200 tonnes of sugar. The sugar is donated by Denmark under the UN World Food Programme.

Ironically, this is the same ship, flying the flag of Jordan, which the pirates had tried to hijack exactly a year ago in the same pirate-infested African waters. The sources said that the pirates had reached the ship in three small craft and had commandeered her to Hobyo region. This is the third such hijacking.

The sources at Director General Shipping headquartered here, confirmed the hijacking and said that the directorate was in touch with the International Maritime Organisation and the International Maritime Bureau’s Piracy Reporting Centre at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to get details of the incident.
